Velavadar Bird Sanctuary

Velavadar unfolds as a vast golden tapestry of India’s only tropical grassland, stretching unbroken toward the Gulf of Khambhat. Located in Gujarat’s Bhal region, the landscape mingles open grassy plains, salty mudflats, shallow wetlands, and thorny scrub—each zone a different stage for wildlife.

Wildlife: Velavadar is the country’s largest surviving blackbuck population and a sanctuary built to protect them. Beyond the antelope, the park is one of the few places in India where endangered Indian grey wolves patrol the grass edges. Striped hyenas, jungle cats, jackals, desert foxes, and nilgai antelope complete the mammal tapestry, each species adapted to the open terrain’s heat and light.

The park’s bird population is legendary. In September–October, the skies fill with a swirling cloud of Montagu’s, Pallid, and Marsh harriers that roost here from Northern Europe. Migratory cranes, lesser florican, Great Indian bustard, and the rare Stolizca’s bushchat add to the rare avian mix found in this grassland.

Velavadar’s specialty is intimacy: herds of blackbuck graze within easy sight, wolves pass just beyond the horizon, and the open grassland offers unobstructed views that make every safari feel like a quiet theatre of survival. It’s a rare, windswept world where a single drive can deliver herds, predators, and a sky filled with birds.
