Pench Tiger Reserve

Nestled in the verdant folds of Madhya Pradesh’s Seoni and Chhindwara districts, where the Pench River carves a shimmering lifeline through ancient teak forests and expansive meadows, Pench Tiger Reserve stands as a premier wildlife sanctuary and Project Tiger stronghold in Central India—widely regarded as the living inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.

Gazetted as a wildlife sanctuary in 1977 and designated a tiger reserve in 1992, it encompasses a core area of 87.5 Sq. Km buffered by 463 square kms, safeguarding a rich mosaic of dry deciduous forests, perennial streams, reservoirs, and rolling hills within the Satpura-Maikal landscape.

Wildlife: This biodiverse haven teems with life, where Bengal tigers prowl with majestic stealth along riverine trails, supported by abundant prey such as Chital herds, Sambar deer, Gaur, Nilgai, and Barking Deer; Leopards, Sloth Bears, Dholes or Wild Dogs, and Striped Hyenas also prowl in these jungles.

Over 325 bird species grace the skies, including the resonant Malabar Pied Hornbill, Crested Serpent Eagles, and iridescent Kingfishers, while smaller wonders like Otters play in the waters and Langurs leap through the canopy. The reserve’s Kipling Trail offers interpretive walks retracing literary lore, highlighting Mowgli’s mythic world, with the Chital serving as its emblematic mascot of resurgence.

Safari access unfolds via key gates: Turiya the prime Kipling Trail and Jamtara. Optimal time to visit is from October to June (peaking February-June for wildlife sightings). Lodges near entry points provide comfortable stays, ideal for dawn drives capturing golden light on meandering rivers and immersive wildlife encounters.
