Little Rann of Kutch

The Little Rann of Kutch unfolds as a vast, otherworldly salt marsh where white crusts glitter against brown earth and the horizon hums with desert wind. Originally part of the Arabian Sea, this 5000 Sq. Km expanse is a seasonal salt desert that transforms during monsoon into shallow wetlands dotted with 74 elevated plateaus—“bets”—the only islands that support vegetation.

Wildlife: In winter, the true magic happens at dusk when thousands of lesser flamingos gather in a single congregation. They rise from the shallow waters in a synchronized pink tide, filling the air with a low, rhythmic honking that echoes across the desert. This flamingo congregation—often 10,000 to 15,000 birds in one place—is one of India’s most spectacular bird gatherings, turning the Little Rann into a living pink canvas.

The crowning jewel here is the Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary, established in 1973 to protect the endangered Asiatic Wild Ass—the khur or Gudkhur—one of the rarest animals on Earth.

Alongside the khur roam Indian wolves, desert foxes, jungle cats, striped hyenas, nilgai, chinkara gazelles, blackbucks, and even the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard.

Nearly 250 bird species—including sandgrouse, francolins, and the iconic bustard—add avian richness to this seemingly barren landscape.

What makes the Little Rann special is its dramatic seasonal metamorphosis and cultural intimacy. October to March offers the best birdwatching, with the flamingo congregation reaching its peak.
