Desert National Park unfolds as Rajasthan’s undulating wilderness, where 44% of the 3,162 Sq. Km Thar is sculpted into golden sand dunes that rise and fall like sleeping giants. Jagged rock formations, salt lakes, and open grasslands interspersed with thorny Khejri trees and Rohida flowers create a unique desert ecosystem where the state bird, animal, tree, and flower all coexist naturally.
Wildlife: As dawn breaks over the dunes near Jaisalmer and Barmer, a ghostly silhouette steps into view. The Great Indian Bustard the godawan stands nearly a meter tall, its pale buff plumage merging with the sands. This critically endangered bird, one of the heaviest flying birds in the world, is the park’s crown treasure. With only 130–150 survivors remaining in India, Desert National Park is one of the last sites where this magnificent species can be found in good numbers, concentrated in the Sudashri landscape area. The desert fox, a small white-footed subspecies of red fox, moves through the same landscape. Its sandy coat, pointed ears, and pale muzzle are perfectly adapted to the barren terrain. Primarily nocturnal, it lounges by day in burrow systems, emerging under moonlight to hunt gerbils and sand rats with carnivorous precision.
Beyond these icons, the park teems with chinkaras (Indian gazelles), blackbucks, desert wolves, desert cats, asp vipers, and spectacular birdlife including sandgrouse, demoiselle cranes, and MacQueen’s bustard.
What makes Desert National Park special is its UNESCO tentative-listed status and its role as the last stronghold for the Great Indian Bustard. It’s a place where the desert breathes, dunes shift like poetry, and every safari reveals a species on the edge of existence a wild, windswept world where wonder never ends
